Joey Hays
Associate
Joey joined NBW in 2017 and brings more than a decade of professional experience in landscape architecture at a variety of types and scales from intimate memorials to large scale parks, bridge parks to a linear landscape underneath an elevated rail line. Joey’s primary research interest envisions maintenance as a design practice, and he believes that no landscape can exist without it. Rooted in mathematics and art, Joey brings a unique perspective to each project, seamlessly blending analytical precision with creative expression. This foundation fuels his passion for inventive and expressive re-purposing of existing materials, as well as his exploration of both high- and low-tech methods of design and construction.
He strives to deliver projects that cultivate enthusiasm and respect for the cultural and ecological history of a site, and bring joy to the communities who live there, those laboring to build, and those who monitor, manage, and maintain it. By honoring the contributions of all involved, he cultivates a sense of shared stewardship, ensuring that landscapes are not only well-designed but also well-loved.
Prior to joining NBW, he worked at OLIN in Philadelphia and ASPECT Studios in their Melbourne office. While at ASPECT, he worked on several award-winning projects including Yagan Square in Perth and Cato Square in Melbourne. While at OLIN, he worked on the Ohio Veterans Memorial & Museum in Columbus and was on the winning team for the 11th Street Bridge Competition in Washington DC with OMA.
