Revitalizing Common Ground
Established in 1841, Forsyth Park is the heart of Savannah, a landscape that has long reflected the city’s civic pride and sense of place. In 2020, the Trustees’ Garden Club commissioned Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects to lead the first comprehensive Master Plan in the park’s history, creating a vision to sustain its beauty, accessibility, and ecological health for generations to come.
The plan preserves the park’s historic structure while addressing the pressures of age and daily use. Working closely with arborists, historians, and the City, NBW developed strategies to restore soils, protect the park’s iconic Live Oak canopy, and improve circulation and accessibility.
A citywide engagement process invited thousands of Savannahians to share what they most cherish about the park and what they hope to see in its future. Their insights shaped a plan that honors the park’s historic framework while guiding thoughtful renewal.
Key recommendations strengthen safety and comfort, restore historic walks and lighting, protect roots and lawns, and better connect spaces for families and play. The Forsyth Park Master Plan offers a clear path for long-term stewardship, ensuring that this treasured public landscape continues to thrive as Savannah’s living common ground.
