Built in two phases over the course of a ten-year client relationship, Hither Hill is a unique seaside residential landscape on Long Island’s East End.
Set above a coastal bluff, the design engages rolling mounds created by the Montauk terminal moraine. NBW collaborated with the architect and client to site the home and conserve existing ecologies, responding to solar and hydrological patterns. The distinct landscape experience encompasses native scrub oak forest, cultivated gardens, and coastal views.
With structures perched along a spine of woodland hills at the top of the site, terraces and gardens build on the native plant communities and offer unfolding experiences and prospect toward the ocean. Transitioning from upper woodland to scrub oak forest to beachscape, a productive vegetable garden sits at the heart of the lower landscape. Careful attention to microclimates determined the need for a wind-break border which was established through a gradient of pine, eastern red cedar, rugosa rose, and beach plum to blend with the nearby natural dunescape.
The completed landscape design creates a tranquil escape for the client's family to connect with each other through wellness, food, health, and the natural environment.
