Nelson Byrd Woltz was commissioned by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection to develop a plan for the renovation of the historic sculpture gardens in Venice. The sensitive redesign focuses on dramatically enhancing the visual interest of the garden while respecting its horticultural and architectural integrity. In its attempt to create a cohesive and unifying experience throughout the series of garden rooms, the design reconsiders visitor circulation, offers plantings with a new focus on seasonal interest, and provides more private spaces for quiet reflection within a public garden. NBW had the unique opportunity of exploring the dynamic dialogue between plants and art in the development of a completely new sculpture garden, selecting pieces from the Guggenheim Collection’s latest acquisition to feature in the landscape of this new garden.
