Working in collaboration with Rogers Partners Architects, NBW is creating a new roof garden space for the Spence School. The new landscape will support an expanded curriculum focused on teaching students about sustainability, ecology, and hydrology through hands-on learning. Located in New York’s Upper East Side, the landscape of the K-12 school will provide a flexible learning space that accommodates students across a diverse age group, allowing them to engage in the process of agriculture that starts with growing plants and ends in cooking and eating food. The growing season will be expanded through the introduction of a greenhouse on the roof, and issues of hydrology and resilience will be explored with functional and didactic elements. A rooftop ecology lab will provide additional space to support a growing and expanding curriculum.
