Nelson Byrd Woltz is accepting applications for design interns and research & communications interns in our Charlottesville, VA and New York, NY offices.  Interns will get to work with a variety of our staff, while working on real projects that will help them grow in their knowledge and experience.  

Design Intern Duties/Responsibilities: Interns will assist the Design and Communications staff with a variety of projects. Assignments will include the following:

  • Prepare CAD drawings, reports and project correspondence
  • Conduct project research
  • Work on communications initiatives
  • Organize project images
  • Assist in day-to-day project-related assignments including model production, presentation drawings/graphics, diagrams, etc.

Research & Communications Intern Duties/Responsibilities: Interns will assist the Design and Communications staff with a variety of projects. Assignments may include the following:

  • Aid in all communication to ensure clear articulation of firm goals and mission
  • Perform research relating to project work, lectures, and outreach.
  • Gather and analyze data.
  • Prepare:
    • Articles
    • Reports
    • Presentations
    • Literature reviews
  • Assist with:
    • Academic research
    • Editing and preparation of manuscripts
  • Review outgoing submissions to clients, press, etc.
  • Ensure consistency and accuracy in format, language, and graphic design of all NBW output, including website and promotional materials.
  • Assist with proposal submissions, track flow, initiatives, process, and submission.
  • Assist with press requests.  
  • Conceptualize and gather material for future publications, web presentations, videos, etc.  Ensure thematic consistency in this process.
  • Special considering will be given to those with proficiency in the following programs:
    • Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Rhino, Lumion, Blender, ArcGIS
  • Potential summer projects include:
    • Visual and narrative asset management and flows
    • Creation of visual documents (book/video/web) on:
      • Interpretive and Wayfinding design
      • Ecological and large-scale planning
      • Cultural and ecological mapping

Educational Requirements: Internship is best suited for students or recent graduates with knowledge/experience in landscape architecture/design, horticulture, architecture, planning or environmental sciences.

Skills, Training or Qualifications: Knowledge and intermediate proficiency in the following computer programs:

  • CAD software (AutoCad latest version)
  • Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign)
  • 3-D Software (Rhino)
  • Microsoft Office Suite Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Time Commitment:

Approximately 12 weeks between May and August; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
