As the main campus of Surry Community College developed over the decades, the challenges of incremental expansion and adaption led to the eventual breakdown in organization and quality of public space. NBW was engaged in 2015 to re-conceptualize the organization of the campus by incorporating a newly acquired parcel of land and transitioning the campus from a single core structure to multiple precincts that are adaptable and well situated to meet the evolving needs of the College. The precincts are laid out in the traditional campus style containing quads and greens, framed by building and pathways and punctuated by trees. A key component to the conceptualization of these precincts is the relation of Frank Corner Boulevard and the creation of the arrival green, which serves to welcome visitors and as the primary armature around which the three main precincts are positioned. The campus addition to the east is linked directly at the entrance and is envisioned to offer expanded programming related to an onsite vineyard, orchard, research center, and event space.
