Tim Popa
Associate Principal
Tim Popa leads NBW’s communications team in articulating the firm’s mission, approach, and designs. He and his team are responsible for communicating complex ecological and design information to diverse audiences using a variety of media from print and web to film and radio. Building on over a decade of experience in landscape architecture, Tim and his team initiated a studio focused on Interpretive and Wayfinding design in the landscape. Through a solid understanding of design, semantics, language, and visual systems, he and his team bring innovation to the creation of public landscape interventions for the education and enjoyment of all.
Current and recent projects include the interpretation design of the Angel Oak Preserve on Johns Island, SC, of Memorial Park’s Land Bridge and Prairie and Memorial Groves and Phase 1 of Karen Cragnolin Park in Asheville, NC. The Interpretive Strategy for Machicomoco — a new public park focused on revealing the Virginia Algonquian landscape — was awarded in 2024 by ASLA. Other projects include data visualization projects for the Smithsonian and videos for Piedmont Park in Atlanta and Memorial Park in Houston. Tim and his team also lead the production of the firm’s recent monograph published by Monacelli/Phaidon — The Land is Full.
His previous experience includes the creation, curation and production of cultural material — from books and films to visual installations and exhibitions. He has gained experience through work at independent music labels, art institutions (MoMA, the New Museum, etc.) and book (D.A.P., Gingko Press, RAM publications) and media publishers. Using digital media and analog means, Tim finds thrilling possibilities for profoundly connecting people to nature, our environment, and shared histories through landscape.
