An iconic, centuries-old live oak, the Angel Oak is a living wonder. Gathering visitors from across the country and from all walks of life, the Angel Oak welcomes, humbles, and renews all who encounter it. Not only does the Angel Oak provide stillness, renewal, and inspiration to human visitors, it is itself alive and supports a vast, interconnected network of lives, from insects and birds to moss, resurrection fern, and a wide variety of plant life.
NBW was tapped by the Lowcountry Land Trust to develop a comprehensive plan that respects the unique and delicate nature of the Angel Oak and its environs. A major goal for the design is to provide a conservation-oriented interpretation of the land that holistically represents the Angel Oak as an invaluable community, cultural, and ecological resource. The design will include accessible boardwalk trails and public use space, new parking areas at a respectful distance from the tree, interpretive resources, opportunities for community engagement, and enhanced infrastructure to support increased visitation and provide for the long-term preservation of the beloved Oak. The design is rooted in the ecological and cultural history of the land and in the Lowcountry Land Trust’s mission of protecting and preserving the lowcountry’s natural resources, including the Angel Oak.
