A Gradient of Ecologies
Embodying distinct iconic California ecologies, the House of Flowers landscape bridges the distance between its Russian River Valley Tasting Room and the Flowers vineyards along the bluffs of the Sonoma Coast. Between these two points, native plant communities have evolved to respond to the dramatic fluctuation in elevation and micro-climates. The transitional journey inland and upland is made visible to visitors through tiered planting strategies at the House of Flowers. The sequence includes Redwood Grove, Oak Woodland, and Chaparral environments, offering views of the low-lying vineyard landscape and riparian corridor beyond.
The cultivated flower garden at the heart of the House of Flowers celebrates the relationship between people and land. It embodies the productive agrarian nature of Sonoma vineyards and their dependence on the surrounding ecologies. The sustainable agricultural production methods of Flowers Winery are carried through the landscape design through pollinator-friendly plants and low-impact maintenance strategies. Throughout, the highly contextual design manifests and amplifies the deeply rooted sense of place and story essential to Flowers' practice of authentic winemaking.
