Memorial Groves
Houston, TX
2023 - Ongoing
Memorial Groves is rooted in deep historical research into Camp Logan, the World War I training camp that once occupied what is now Houston’s largest urban park. Archival documents, archaeological surveys, and personal histories of soldiers, some celebrated, others silenced, have shaped a design that fulfils the park’s memorial intent. Set within the area where the greatest number of Camp Logan artifacts remain, the landscape will be both archive and tribute: more than 2,000 bald cypress, chosen for their resilience, planted in formation will evoke the scale and regimentation of the camp and the lives it held. Traces of historic streets, preserved foundations, and interpretive elements will reveal the daily patterns of the soldiers and the context of Camp Logan within the history of World War I.
